Personally I think that if syrup is "absorbed" into the pancake then it leaves a disgusting aftertaste, and waffles (especially belgian waffles) somehow just taste better. Plus, if you put a little vegetable oil on the waffle iron, then nothing will stick. Finally, who cares about making pancakes into stupid shapes, they're FOOD, not art!!!
Therefore, I believe that waffles are far superior to pancakes in every way. In fact, I actually HATE pancakes (mostly because of the weird sour aftertaste from when the syrup absorbs in there too much)

Pancakes are porous and absorbent, therefore allowing the syrup/butter content to be consumed in greater quantities with less mess. And waffle irons are a bitch to clean, especially if you add blueberries or anything to the mix. You can also make pancakes in any shape you can conceive (cacti, Mickey Mouse, boobs, genitalia, etc.) Pancakes for sure, how is this even a question?
